Finding keywords to beat your competitors

Whether internet browsers visit Google, Yahoo! or any other search engine, their basic most logical way of searching for information is by a specific keyword or keyword phrase.

Keyword phrases are a combination of words utilized to call the SEs attention about a particular page of your website. When choosing your keywords it is important make your selection to achieve a narrow concept which will allow you to compete.

Say for instance that you own a computer shop and you do repairs and upgrades. Choosing a keyword such as “computers” is too broad to have any impact among all the internet pages having that word within their content. It is wiser to narrow your keyword to something like “Computer Repair Services” or “Computer Upgrades”; there you will be choosing the proper niche within every aspect covered by the word “Computers”

Keyword phrases are what drive the search engines to decide how to find, rank and position web pages in order to present visitors with the most relevant and quality content.

With that said, there is no way any webmaster can produce the desired free ranking without the optimization of each page with the right keyword phrase or phrases. After making a general decision as to what particular niche you will approach, this is the most important job you will perform in terms of on-page optimization.

Keyword Optimization

Optimizing your page for the right keyword phrase requires a general knowledge of keyword value, weight and prominence, as well as a detail analysis of the competition.  Let’s start by understanding how you will be able to properly select the perfect keyword phrase for each of your pages.

Remember that search engines rank pages, not websites; therefore each of your pages must be focused on a particular keyword or keyword phrase as the main flag to find your website on the World Wide Web.  This is what we call Keyword Optimization; it refers to the proper quantification, distribution, positioning and even formatting of your keyword phrase on your content copy and html.

You can start your keyword optimization quest by obtaining the proper tools that will help you get keyword suggestions, and help you measure all the factors involved in your page optimization efforts. I cannot stop raving about Web SEO as the tool for excellence for keyword phrase optimization, page analysis, competition comparisons and link building. You can download web seo for free right here; however, you may want to consider purchasing the tool as it will have all the features available and more flexibility of use. That is of course if you are serious about your keyword phrase optimization. Another tool you can use is the Overture's Keyword Suggestion Tool which is also free to use and provides basic keyword suggestion for chosen words.

Here is a brief explanation of some keyword analysis related terms:

bullet

Keyword Phrase Density or Weight: Refers to the relativity of your keyword repetition vs. the entire amount of words in your page (including Title, heading, anchor and body). To increase keyword phrase weight within your page you can either decrease the total amount of words on your page, or increase the amount of times your keyword phrase repeats within the text copy.

bullet

Keyword Phrase Prominence: Refers to the importance of your keyword as it is measured within your page. You can highlight importance to your focus keyword phrase on your page by increasing the proximity of it to the beginning of the page. For this, it is recommended that your focus keyword phrase is used as a heading within your body copy (using <H1>…<H3> tags, which make them bigger).

Since you may have various focus keywords for a particular page (1-3 is recommended), you should place your most important phrase at the top heading and work your way down the page with the other keywords based on importance using smaller headings in comparison with the main one.

bullet

Keyword Phrase Proximity: Search engines can detect the proximity of each repetition of your keyword phrase. It is important to repeat your focus keyword phrases enough to make up the proper weight, however, don’t forget your readers. The content must not look optimized to the human eye, the content of your articles must flow smoothly without looking over-stuffed with repetition. Also, placing your focus keyword phrases too close to each other may be considered spam by the search engines.

Now that you understand the concept, start thinking of what each of your pages will be about. Then you can use Web SEO to do a keyword analysis based on the KEI (which is a calculation based on keyword phrase daily searches vs. competition), choose the most profitable keywords based on the highest KEIs until you compile 10 – 15 of them.

You will them narrow those down based on various analyses including, relativity of content and existing competition.
