Jambiani, Tanzania - A Day at the Beach
After getting up early and having a delicious breakfast, we were picked up on foot by the driver of the shared mini-van we'd be taking to the East coast of Zanzibar. He led us down the winding footpath-alleyways until we reached the road and the van, and he admonished us to not tell the other passengers the price we were paying, as we'd gotten so good at bargaining for things out here that we'd gotten the ride for a steal. (about $6 each instead of $10.) We set off picking up other tourists from around Stonetown, then drove east across the island. In the interior forest we were able to see Colobus monkeys in the trees along the road. After about an hour, we dropped some people off at the more party-oriented beach, Paje, then headed south along the coast -- pausing to let a group of stray camels cross the road. Our mini-van stopped to let people puruse various hotel-bungalow colonies -- we made a deal with the manager at the Grand Jambiani Bungalows to give a ...

Nadi - Viti Levu Island, Fiji - Fiji, here I am!!!!

Gansbaai, South Africa - Shark Cage Diving
This is possibly the greatest thrill that you will ever experience. Just imagine pulling up on the boat in 'Shark Alley', the open stretch of water between the mainland and Dyer Island off Gansbaai, South Africa referred to as the White Shark Diving capital of the world. The wonderful thing about shark diving in Gansbaai is that you only have to take a 20 minute boat ride to Dyer Island. In the winter time we can even see sharks before the shark chum is dropped into the water and it is clear to see why Gansbaai is named as being the most densely populated area for Great White Sharks in the World. We get White Sharks here along the coast all year round but Winter is the best time to come and see these beautiful animals. The beauty is that in Gansbaai you do not have to be a qualified diver to see the Great White Sharks from the boat or cage. As the cages are mounted next to the boat and floated on the surface it is very easy for inexperienced divers to jump in and take a ...

Salzburg, Austria - Beginn einer neuen Reise
Hallo! Don Det, Lao Peoples Dem Rep - Mekong Meandering
Well, here we are again. We made it out of Vientiane and hit the road less travelled heading south along the Mekong River in a Sawngthaew which is a small truck with an open sided canopy over the back and a bench seats either side of the tray - the local communal taxis/livestock and motorbike transport/removalists and anything else. We’re not sure what the carrying capacity is supposed to be as every time we think it’s full someone else jumps on. We were a real topic of conversation for the locals. They were feeling Karyll’s wrists, pinching and pulling the hairs on her arms and indicating that they’d love to have her long thin nose but that it must cost a fortune to feed her. As always, the question asked was ‘how many children’ and with the reply of none, there were many saddened faces and sympathetic gestures to Karyll before turning on Mal with accusing stares and wanting to know what was wrong with him. All good fun – not a word of English just lots of smiles,

Antigua, Guatemala - Schoenes Wochenende

Brisbane, Australia - Bris Vegas
We set off from Sydney to Brisbane on a high after meeting Alf Stewart!!! The weather here was so nice, a lot warmer than Melbourne, Dermot was delighted as it was back to shorts wearing weather again! Our first few days we spent relaxing and looking around the city. Brisbane is a really nice place, one f our favorite cities here in Oz. It's a cool city, nice and relaxed and the weather is so nice, which really helps!! In the city center we went to a really cool man made beach, called "Streets Beach". Its right in the heart of the city, the perfect place for a dip when the weather gets too hot! We also got the ferry out to Straddie Island, around an hours trip from the city. This island was so beautiful, it was like somewhere in Thailand. We chilled out on the beaches where there was a surf competition on. Dermot was catching up on his skills from a young lad as a body boarder!! We were lucky enough to see four whales out in the water, they came in really close ...

Zanzibar, Tanzania - A Spicy Day
After a delicious breakfast of a Zanzibari pancake and fresh fruit at the Haven Backpacker Hotel, we were picked up on foot by our guide for our "Spice Tour." A popular day-long excursion in Zanzibar is to visit a spice plantation and see and taste the spices that once dominated the Zanzibar economy. After a mini-van full of tourists had been assembled, we set off for a short drive up into the "hills" of the island, at more than 100 meters. The spice plantation looked more or less like the jungle to our untrained eyes, but soon the secrets of the spices were revealed. Our guide led us slowly through the farm, pausing before an ordinary bush while young farm workers would distribute bunches of leaves to the tourists. Upon crushing or tearing and smelling the leaves, the whole tour group would utter a collective "ohhh." The smells were always so familiar, but it usually took our guide to reveal the name before anyone would be able to put a finger ...

Zanzibar, Tanzania - Welcome to the Island
We woke up on the train and noted that, according to the kilometer posts along the train track, it was only 150 or so kilometers to the end of the line. A few words about the train: It was built by the Germans around 1900. It is coal powered, and the engine emits huge plumes of black smoke through two smokestacks as we chug along at anywhere from 15 to 40 miles per hour. It is a single, very narrow-gauged track and runs through almost no population centers, and crosses almost no surface roads. In the desert-like center of the country, there is just a whole lot of nothing on either side, save the occasional stick and wood hut. Everyone who sees the train coming waves to the passengers, as there is only one train every other day, so its passing is a major event of the week. When the locals (especially children) notice that it is a "mzunga" (white person) waving at them, they giggle, or jump up and down and shout, "Mzunga!". As the train approaches it passes ...

Dodoma, Tanzania - First Class Luxury
First thing in the morning we left the renovated German hunting lodge and walked to the nearby train station to see about last-minute availability of a first-class cabin on that day's train to Dar Es Salaam. We arrived promptly at 7:30, just as the ticket-lady had instructed us the day before, and were told that we would have to wait for the Station Master to arrive before we'd know if we were in luck. While we were waiting, some American medical students we'd met the night before at dinner strolled into the station with their packs, headed for the train. We'd learned earlier that they had reserved the last available first-class cabin on the train a few days before we arrived in Tabora. Men and women can only travel together in the sleeping compartments if they book the entire cabin, which necessitated us reserved a 2-berth first class cabin, as opposed to a 6-berth second class. The appearance of our friends in the station surprised us, as we were under the ...

Kuching, Malaysia - Last Entry
Borneo is always interesting and Bako National Park was no exception. Once one got past the boardwalk and paved trails the place was absolutely deserted. I spent a few days exploring the outer reaches of the park and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Most trails didn't even have boot prints in them which tells me I was the first person to pass through in a few days. The outer beaches were absolutely empty and made me feel like I was the only person on the planet. It was a great way to end my time in Borneo and relax before heading on. Since my account with globenotes expires in a few days I figured this would be a good time to wrap up my travels as well. As many of you know I will be in Australia for a year to work and save up some cash to hopefully travel again. Hopefully I can see most of you in Australia or in the near future. Check out some last pics from Borneo. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2200435&l=3d18f&id=5520127

Bangkok, Thailand - 7/20/08 staff adventures
8:50pm staff adventures this afternoon in downtown thailand... rode taxis, the skytrain, smaller motor bike taxi things called "tuk tuks". saw the outside of the royal palace, rode a "skiff" ? like boat down the river next to houses on stilts. our next transportation adventures will include the bus and the motorbikes... orange-vested taxi-bike drivers, and you get on the back and hang on to the driver's waist... they wiggle in and out of traffic and never stop unless it's a red light. oh man. but I feel safer and more comfortable here in Thailand than in either guatemala or jamaica. I could travel bangkok by myself... people are friendly, and they don't stare at you as much. I'd love to bring my family or friends here. we were ravenous and when we got back to the mall we chowed down... chicken/cashew/egg fried rice, broth stuff, DQ ice cream cone. amazing. prepping for tomorrow's class. we are jovial and refreshed. to ...

Mission Beach, Australia - 154 days down, 154 to go...
We have reached our half way point and now have less time left than we have already had away! We'll be back 5 months today! ... After so long on the road you start to become very comfortable and things seem easy and second nature; a good travel balls up soon slaps you in the face and makes you aware you can't get too comfortable! This happened to us on half-way day... We left the delights of the Koala Village hostel behind at 9.40am on the bus towards the ferry. Meaning we'd meet the 10.15am ferry, meaning we'd meet the 11.30am Greyhound bus from Townsville to Mission Beach, arriving at 3pm. Nope. The ferry was cancelled for no better reason that "it's just not running", no problem, the 11.10am ferry will get us to Townsville at 11.32am, meaning we'd miss the Greyhound but we're told someone has rung ahead and they're going to wait for us. Great! ... But they didn't. As the ferry was 'landing', the Greyhound was ...

San Francisco, United States - San Francisco
Well, This is the first stop on my around the world adventure this summer. I have been to San Fran several times before but this is my first chance to get out and see a bit of the city. After the training on Thursday Tricia, who helped me on this first round of training, and I wandered around and found a cute Irish Pub where we could have dinner before Tricia headed back to Toronto on the red eye. We had a great time talking about shinanigans in Ireland. Good Times :) Today I took the advice of Claudia and Shane and decided to take the Ferry out to Sausalito and back since the trips to Alcatraz were all sold out. First stop was to hit Old Navy to find a sweater since it is a lot colder here than I expected! Of course I did not make it out with just the sweater but after dropping the rest of my shopping spoils I was ready to go. I went to the Ferry Building and got a chance to look around their weekly Farmer's Market and wow, were there a lot of organic and funky ...

Okpo, Korea - South - Regenfrei

Bangkok, Thailand - 7/20/08
8:36am yesterday we went to a huge children's museum. some of the floors were disney themed, and the kids could explore the 7 dwarfs' bedroom, "under the sea" room, aladdin's magic carpet room. we even saw the princesses and the evil characters in costume. :-) we saw cinderella lose her glass slipper; we saw Ursala (?) from little mermaid; and we saw jasmine and jafar from aladdin. we went to the butterfly farm... a screened in outdoor place with tropical plants. Saw lots of cool butterflies flying around. The kids didn't last very long because it was hot. We had dinner at a MK Restaurant, where each table had a "hot pot" (like we had at jincheng's house). We cooked our own vegetables and meat and seafood right there in the pot. Then we added rice, green onion, and an egg and cooked our own "cream of rice" soup. By this time, we all were exhausted, and I had a table of four little kids all trying to put items ...

Freetown, Sierra Leone - Sacrifice
Hello everyone!! So its been a very exciting few days on the Old Railway Line! My new home is coming along slowly, hopefully you got a chance to check out the pictures I posted! Its been very cold in Freetown the past few days because the rains have been heavy and its cute the humidity way down. Brr... I went down to the local market and bought a "country cloth blanket"! You can never have too many beautiful, hand sewn fabrics and blankets. Yesterday I had a few meetings downtown in the morning and then decided to head home for lunch around noon. As per usual, I took a taxi from Siaka Stevens Street, the main drag in town, to Tengbeh Town where I reside. As the taxi slowed in front of my house, I noticed something very unusual blocking the path to my main gate. Logically, my eyes told me that it was an enormous animal with horns, that appeared to be napping in my driveway. I got out of the taxi hesitantly and walked towards the light brown beast. Cow. Ok, so a cow was ...

Magnetic Island, Australia - 3 days on Maggie Island...
We read about Magnetic Island when we were in Melbourne and really liked the sound of it, so that's why we're here, 6 weeks on. It was grey when we arrived and it slowly progressed into full on rain until the next morning. After a half an hour breather it continued to rain until early afternoon the second day. This rain time was mainly spent relaxing, reading and playing cards, with a short walk down to Horseshoe Bay to have a look around the shops. As the weather eased in the afteroon we decided to do the Bungalow Bay Koala Village tour. It was a wildlife park attached to our hostel. It was no ordinary hostel, it was reminiscent of the Beachouse in Fiji with it big airy hut-like dorms and big outdoor communal area (with a bar). The tour consisted of visiting lots of animals and getting a real hands-on experience which was awesome, we'd seen all of the animals in other parks in Australia but this time we were allowed to touch! First on the list, much to and my ...
