I am sure you heard the phrase "Content is king" when it relates to SEO and Website marketing. It is, of course very important to apply all best SEO practices while designing your website or while posting on your blogs. However, there are two pieces that are more than crucual for sites to rank well; these are inbound links and, read this, "the time internet users spend on your pages". Why is this so important? because the more time a reader spends on your page or website, the more search engines beilieve that your content is refreshing, related and interesting. That is what search engines ultimately look for.
The best thing is that your content will not only help you rank higher when it is well-written and compelling, but it will also help you build link popularity over time. For instance, and I do this myself; how many times have you published a web page linking to informative reference material you found interesting and related to your content? If you are looking to please your readers, you have done this.
Now think of you being on the other side of the spectrum. You write interesting, related and compelling content, then you work your on-page criteria for SEO and get some links from others. You are well on the way for ranking, but imagine people coming across your content and simply linking to you. There is no "Authority" attached to this, the main reason why this would happen is because your content pulls.
Have you ever published a page, which all of the sudden becomes a sensation? ranking 1st page on Google and Yahoo, then after a few weeks it just vanishes from its privileged position. Why? Because Google will find your content related and put you where you deserve to be according to its algorithms, but see, Google cannot really understand your content, it just ranks you based on a bunch of calculations that show how much probability your content has to be the most related for a particular search. But what happens later is that your readers will make position on the search results is either long or short term based, just by staying to read or just bouncing at once.
Here are a few tips on how to compell readers to stay longer:
- Write Well, good grammar and punctuation.
- Sound like you know what you are talking about, even if you don't.
- Provide accurate information on the topic.
- Write clean and short paragraphs (keeping them to no more than 5-6 rows each), this is not a book, it is a web page. Web readers don't really read, they scan through the paragraphs.
- Write with a flow, where a clear beginning, middle and end exist.
- Give readers a chance to find further resources whether it is within your site or elsewhere.
- Give others the opportunity to read through your text, they may be able to find stuff you didn't notice and give you feedback on how your text flows.

I have one more. Do not write long sentences that span 4 lines without punctuation. That was the problem I had before.
